Board of Outreach
The statistics are staggering. One in ten families with children, in Waterbury, face food security issues, meaning that choices are often made between providing healthy food to the children and paying for other bills, or forgoing food for the adults and supplementing with cheap, but emotionally satisfying food. During the school year, many of the children of these families are enrolled in the federally funded school breakfast and lunch programs. Our Summer Lunch Program is mean to help fill the gap for these children by providing, everyday throughout the summer, a basic, but nutritional bag lunch.
This year is our fourth year. Thanks to the superlative efforts of Sandy Lewis and Wendy Haupt as organizers, this year has also been our smoothest operating year. We will have made and served about 800 lunches by the time the program ends next week.
The following are some photographs taken by Barbara Tomasi Gay, the assistant educational leader at Thatcher Brook Primary School, during some of the summer school sessions. Many of the children who took summer school also received lunch from us.
